RECOMMENDATIONS
🌟 Recommendations
The ascent of Chachani Volcano is a challenging and fascinating experience. To fully enjoy it and stay safe, keep the following recommendations in mind:
🏃♂️ Prior acclimatization: It is essential to have spent at least 2 to 3 days in Arequipa (2,300 m.a.s.l.) or to have done previous high-altitude hikes (e.g., Laguna de Salinas, Colca Valley). This helps reduce the risk of altitude sickness.
🧥 Dress in layers: The weather changes drastically between day and night. Bring thermal underwear, a windproof jacket, gloves, a fleece hat, leggings, and waterproof pants. The temperature can drop to -10°C or lower during the early morning hours.
👟 Wear appropriate footwear: High-top trekking boots with good grip are essential. Avoid wearing casual or athletic shoes.
🎒 Pack the essentials in a 30–40L personal backpack: Include a headlamp, sunscreen, sunglasses, energy snacks, toilet paper, a reusable water bottle, a change of clothes, and a camera.
💧 Stay hydrated: Altitude can cause fatigue. Carry at least 2 liters of water or use insulated bottles with herbal teas. Drinking coca tea before and during the ascent is also recommended.
⚠️ Avoid alcohol or heavy meals the day before: This reduces your physical performance and can worsen altitude sickness symptoms.
🕯️ Bring a headlamp with spare batteries: The hike to the summit begins at dawn and requires constant visibility.
❌ Fires and littering are prohibited: Respect the environment. The mountain is a fragile ecosystem.
🧘♂️ Maintain a steady pace, without rushing: The secret to success is walking slowly but steadily, breathing deeply, and taking breaks when the guide indicates.
