ITINERARY
Itinerary: Sillar Route + Culebrillas Canyon
Day 1 – Culture, History, and Unique Geological Landscapes
Pick-up at your hotel and departure for the quarries (8:30 – 9:00 a.m.)
The adventure begins with pick-up from your accommodation or meeting point in the historic center of Arequipa. As we leave the city, the guide will share details about the history and influence of the Misti, Chachani, and Pichu Pichu volcanoes, whose eruptions gave rise to sillar, the volcanic stone that distinguishes the colonial architecture of the White City.
Visit to the Añashuayco Quarry
We will arrive at the emblematic Sillar Route, where we will learn about the extraction and carving process of this stone. The master stonemasons, heirs to a tradition passed down from generation to generation, demonstrate how sillar takes shape using hand tools. Here you will find monumental sculptures and handcrafted images that reveal the connection between art, identity, and Andean craftsmanship.
Time for photos and handicrafts
There will be time to explore the site, take photos, and, if you wish, purchase small pieces of art carved from volcanic stone directly from the artisans. It’s an opportunity to support local crafts and take home an authentic souvenir of Arequipa.
Transfer to Culebrillas Canyon
We will continue to Culebrillas Canyon, just a few minutes from the quarry. During the journey, the guide will explain the geological formations of the volcanic landscape surrounding the area, where the desert and rock create striking visual contrasts.
Hike inside Culebrillas Canyon
We will begin a guided hike through the canyon, a narrow natural gorge with high walls and sinuous reddish and golden hues. The hike lasts approximately 40 minutes, surrounded by silence, wind, and stone, with formations that appear to have been sculpted by unseen hands over thousands of years.
It’s an ideal place to connect with nature and capture unique photographs.
Final stop at the artisan workshops
Before returning to the city, we’ll revisit the area near the quarry to admire an exhibition of carvings and sculptures in sillar stone created by local artisans.
Return to Arequipa (approx. 1:00 p.m.)
We begin our return to the historic center of Arequipa. This concludes this experience that combines history, geology, and living tradition: the authentic Sillar Route and the Culebrillas Canyon.
