RECOMMENDATIONS

🌟 Recommendations

Although it’s a short tour, the Short Inca Trail requires preparation and attention to detail. Here are some essential tips to help you make the most of this experience:

  • Arrive in Cusco early. We recommend arriving at least one day before the tour to acclimatize to the altitude and get a good night’s rest before the start of the hike.
  • Pack a light backpack. Only carry the essentials for the hike: water, a poncho, a camera, snacks, sunscreen, and a light jacket. The weight will be your best friend.
  • Dress in layers. The weather varies greatly throughout the day: cool mornings, hot afternoons, and mild nights in Aguas Calientes. Ideally, you should wear light clothing but also a windproof or waterproof jacket.
  • Protect your skin and eyes. Don’t forget to use sunscreen, sunglasses with UV protection, and a hat or cap to protect yourself from the sun’s rays at high altitude.
  • Wear appropriate footwear. Wear hiking boots or shoes with good soles that you’ve broken in before. Avoid wearing new shoes on this hike.
  • Stay hydrated. Carry a reusable water bottle with at least one liter of water and take frequent sips to avoid fatigue.
  • Don’t forget your passport. It’s mandatory to show it at the Inca Trail checkpoint and at Machu Picchu. It must match the information on your ticket.
  • Bring insect repellent. Although there aren’t many insects, mosquitoes are common in humid areas, especially in the afternoon.
  • Have Peruvian soles in cash. Not all businesses in Aguas Calientes accept cards. We recommend carrying some cash for personal expenses or tips.
  • Respect the trail and archaeological sites. Don’t leave trash, don’t touch Inca structures, and always follow the guide’s instructions.
